High School Art is a general art class exposing high school students to color, design, 3-D, painting, and drawing. There is an emphasis on drawing, using techniques from Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain.
MS art is almost exclusively a course of three-dimensional projects. Students will be exposed to building with clay, plastics, paper, cardboard, paper mache’, and wood and wire.
This class has been structured so that no middle school student will feel left out because of any insecurity about their artistic ability.
Intermediate elective (4th-6th grade)
“I know who painted that!”
Last year we explored the Masters who painted more than a hundred years ago. This year we will be looking at more contemporary artists, some living now. We will discuss their lives, their dreams, their handicaps, and what motivated them. The fun part will be when we try to match their style or subjects through our own projects! Warhol, Grandma Moses, Chihuly, Faith Ringold, Mary Engelbreit, Jacob Lawrence, Dali, and others! (this 9 week class will be repeated four times)
Lower School Art (TK-6th)
Art in the lower grades is taught through a new theme each quarter. This brings continuity to the projects and displays, as well as the decor of the room. The students come to art generally aware of what their project will be about. Themes also allow for cross-curriculum teaching in social studies and the sciences. Some 9 week-themes have included:
Africa, Folk Art, Rain Forest, Egypt, and Children’s Literature.
Lower school art also focuses on learning how to draw.
